To the Moon!: The True Story of the American Heroes on the Apollo 8 Spaceship

The exciting and inspiring true story of Apollo 8, the first crewed spaceship to break free of the Earth's orbit and reach the moon, by the best-selling author of Apollo 13.

What's more exciting that spaceships and astronauts? How about a spaceship carrying the first astronauts ever to see the moon first-hand - on Christmas!

The year was 1968, and the American people were still reeling from the spacecraft fire that killed the Apollo 1 crew a year earlier. On top of that, there were rumors that the Russian cosmonauts were getting ready to fly around the moon. NASA realized that they needed to take a bold step - and that they needed to take it now. They wanted to win the space race against Russia and hold true to President Kennedy's promise to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. So in a risky move, a few days before Christmas of that year, they sent Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders to the moon!

This book about the exciting and inspiring true story of Apollo 8, the first crewed spaceship to break free of Earth's orbit and reach the moon, tells the story of these three brave men, the frantic rush to get their rocket ready, and the journey that gave the American people - and the world - a new look at the planet we live on and the corner of space we inhabit.

Filled with the science and training required to put a person into space, and every detail of what it's like to live in a spaceship for days on end (including what happens when astronauts need to use the bathroom), this book is sure to leave kids clamoring for a spot on the next mission to outer space.

Maybe it is because of when I grew up, but I have always been fascinated with the race to the moon. Christmas 2018, the world will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first manned spaceship circumnavigating the moon. The story of this voyage is told in To the Moon!, which is an adaptation of Apollo 8: The thrilling story of the first mission to the moon for younger readers.A somewhat thrilling aspect of the story is that Frank Borman, Commander of Apollo 8, later in life settled in Las Cruces, NM where I now live. It was exciting to read about this local figure. While all three of the astronauts on Apollo 8 are included in the story, To the Moon! focuses on Commander Frank Borman. Authors Jeffrey Kluger and Ruby Shamir include some details of Borman’s early life and track his military career as it led to his NASA career. The authors include many interesting details of the Apollo program. They also include details on the Apollo 8 flight and the interactions between Borman, his co-workers Jim Lovell and Bill Anders, and the ground crew. Students will be interested in some of the smaller details such as what was done with human waste products during the flight and information about their meals. There is some terminology which may cause giggles or slight embarrassment but it really is not presented in an inappropriate way. It may even add to the appeal of the book to middle schoolers.Another aspect of the story which I appreciated was the focus on the families and how they handled the dangerous situation the three men were placed in. Jeffrey Kluger and Ruby Shamir wrote the story in such a way that readers will “get it” what it was like to have your father embark on a mission that no one really knew what the outcome would be.I also appreciated that the authors included the Biblical text of Genesis 1 which the astronauts read to their television audience during one of their live broadcasts as they were circling the moon. While the copy I read was an uncorrected advanced galley copy, I believe that this book would be a beneficial resource for middle school and possible upper elementary classes who are studying the Apollo program. I know that I will be adding To the Moon! to our collection for our sixth grade science unit on the Apollo program.I want to thank Philomel Books, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group, for sending me the advanced copy to review for my children’s literature blog. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. To the Moon! is one of those titles I couldn’t put down. I highly encourage you to add this recently released book to your library.

Fantastic book delving into the timeline of the Apollo 8 mission, including how it came about, where the astronauts came from, and how they succeeded in their mission. Main takeaway for me is how nail-biting the things were at the time (and probably still are). For me I definitely had an idealized version of how NASA was able to make the Apollo 8 mission a success. Of course after reading this book it's more like anything else in life: that it takes a lot of failure to succeed. I appreciate knowing this, even if it does cause a bit of anxiety. The incredible nature of dealing with gravity on astronomical levels is that sure, there was a lot of failure; but those learning experiences needed to shape into near-perfection in order to be able to hit the correct tolerances. For anything as big as hitting the appropriate return orbit to something as small as figuring out how to shave in space, these experiences had a requirement of being well thought out; I think Jeffrey Kluger does a fantastic job explaining this throughout the book, which is why I think it deserves five stars.

Good book.

I was excited to see this book. This is an exciting historical event. I was eager to get it in my son’s hands to read. It’s hard to believe that we are coming up on 50 years since Apollo 8. The book is for grades 5 and 6. My son loves history and I knew that this would be something that would interest him. This is definitely a story to fuel the imagination of a 12 year old. I had a hard time putting the book down. This is a hardback chapter book with 14 chapters and 258 pages. The back of the book has a glossary for all the Apollo 8 words. There are also 14 pages of photos of everything from the take off, astronaut suits, and several other pertaining to the mission of Apollo 8.The majority of the story is of Commander Frank Borman. There is a lot of interesting details that you will learn about his early life, military career up until he is part of NASA. You will also get acquainted with the other astronauts just not a much details. There is just a lot of depth in the story from what it would be like being in space. What about bathrooms? What about your family who witness the horrific events a year earlier with Apollo 1 explosion. The book was a real page turner and I look forward to hearing my son’s thoughts on this story. This is a great story to teach your kids history of the first mission to travel to the moon.I received a free copy of this product from Penguin Random House in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions I have expressed are my own or those of my family. I truly enjoyed every moment of reading this book! It will appeal to anyone who loves space, but also people who don't know anything about the space program.
