I have used John W Schaum's Piano Course for students of varying ages (grades K - 8) for the past 18 years. I believe the course has a steady and logical progression, which can be easily complimented with other exercises and tools. I will sometimes change the order of songs after #10 and have on occasion skipped #34 - #36 when moving on to B - The Blue Book in this same series. This book follows a Pre A - The Green Book, which I usually use for students 10 and younger. I also use other methods e.g., Michael Aaron, John Thompson, Alfred, and Bastien but I like the John W. Schaum course for most of the age group I teach.
I used this during piano lessons when I was a kid and I'm so glad I was able to buy this again. The songs are fun to play and melodic to listen to. The music theory lessons weaved throughout are also very basic and easy to understand, even for someone in 1st grade. If you have a child using this book, you may even hear them playing songs you recognize after not too long, like simplified versions of "Jingle Bells" and "Ode to Joy." Start 'em while they're young, and they'll remember how to play these songs for the rest of their lives. Totally worth the $5.00 or whatever, if you ask me.
The songs I grew up playing now re-packaged for my kid. I like that he's playing music I played. There are some skills that seem inappropriate for advancement in this book and take away somewhat from the typically really great chronology in the Schaum books. Playing with hands crossed seems unnecessary to harp on at this level as it is so rarely used in playing more advanced music.
I took piano eons ago, when I was a kid. I was never that good, but there were a few songs that I still sit down to play once in a while. One of them is the abbreviated version of "The 1812 Overture" in this John W. Schaum book E. If you want a song that is not real difficult, but not too easy either, and will bring down the rafters and leave everybody clapping, it's this song!And I lost my book. I have all the other colors, but not the E-Violet. I am so glad that after 40 years it is still published so I can order another copy!Happy Reader
I have used this series of books to teach for 20 years now, and recommend them highly! This series builds a solid musical foundation, with a balanced mix of theory and technique. Songs are fun to play and classics are built into the lessons. I learned to play the piano as a child using this series and still remember many of the songs. I will continue to use this series as long as I teach piano. Excellent!
I am a beginner. You don't need any previous experience. I found this series a "Life-Saver." My confidence, and ability to read and play music improved dramatically. I practice roughly one hour daily, and I can see and hear my improvement. I will keep with the series as I advance my piano playing skills. I highly recommend this easy to follow and understand series.
I grew up on the John W. Schaum books so now that I have a little one learning to play, I have purchased the series again for training. Alot of information, theory and practical. The songs haven't changed in over 20 years, and are still just as fun for any beginner.
I used the older version of this book when I was a child and it was excellent. Easy to read and understand. Perfect for learning to play the piano if you want to go at your own pace. I had a private instructor as well but the book was the key to my lessons. I have almost the entire collection but they are a bit out-dated so I plan to buy the new ones soon for my own review, and also so I can teach my kids to play when they are old enough. I loved the John W. Schaum series. Note: These books aren't really theory based so if you intend to teach yourself, you'll also need a book to really teach you the basics (Tip: I used the AB Guide to music theory by Eric Taylor, it's alittle difficult to find now though), once you master the theory, you'll be on your way to playing tons of songs. Fun fun fun!!!
